The Institute · The Archive

Do not enter. This means you.

Below the launderette, behind an unmarked door, the Archive holds everything taken off display. Only the Porter enters. If anyone else does, it will all be erased — and forgotten. This has never happened.

What is kept

The Archive holds what display has finished with: objects retired from the Catalogue, registers superseded, silence logs filled to the margins, and one flake of the bench’s original varnish. The store upstairs holds what has never been displayed; the Archive holds what has been displayed and released. The distinction is absolute and is explained to no one, as no one may enter.

The rule

Only the Porter may enter the Archive. Should any other person enter, for any reason and for any duration, the Archive will be completely erased and all items within shall be forgotten — not mislaid, not retired, but forgotten, as if accessioned never. The Porter checks the seal daily. The seal has never been broken. This has never happened.
